New battery needed for TT Mk2

Having just replaced the battery on the Focus, it looks like the TT one is virtually dead. Even the CTEK charger couldn't give it enough charge to start the car. It is over 8 years old so not a bad innings.

 

There are a baffling array of numbers on top of the old Varta battery but I'm thinking it can't be that hard to replace the battery, can it?

 

Suggestions of battery to get and whether the process of replacing it is idiot-proof enough for someone like me to do would be gratefully received. :)

Damn! I was hoping it was going to be as easy as changing a light-bulb.

 

I've seen some posts on-line that suggest it is not so hard, but your link does make it out to be a little more technical. All the batteries I have found don't quite match the technical data of the current one so I don't seem to be able to replace like for like as they suggest.

 

Just had a squiz at the manual and it basically says, "this is rock hard techno science stuff, see your dealer". 

 

It isn't stop-start so it shouldn't be that hard, surely?... :dizzy:

It isn't that hard but the various controllers do like a continuous supply of electrickery.

Some things on the reconnect list may not be necessary depending on what is affected during the period of no supply.

 

From memory the workshop manual recommends applying an alternative 12v supply during the battery change process.  I'll check it later.

I knew I'd put it somewhere!

 

That KB article I quoted above really needs updating.  The simpler way to do things is by connecting a slave supply to the car for the duration of the battery change.

Use the "jump start" terminals under the bonnet as the cig lighter is ignition fed. 

Use a slave battery or an 'old style' mains charger, not the Ctek type.

It's unlikely that your car will have the battery charge monitoring unit.

I think I'm going to go down the dealer route since I can't find a battery of the same spec. I also don't have an old style charger.

 

So my next question is, can I use the CTEK charger to start the car to get it down to the dealers by connecting it to the terminals under the bonnet?

 

I've got home start break down cover if not.

No, the Ctek charge can't supply the required current to start the engine.

 

Do you mean the Audi dealer?  If so, what about trying a local battery specialist instead?  The price will normally include fitting. 

 

As far as spec is concerned it does not HAVE to be an exact match.  Apart from the physical size the imprtant numbers are CCA (cold cranking amps), capacity (Ah) and you should also see reserve capacity quoted which is a figure in minutes for how long the battery will last under a specific load - important for modern cars given that there's always something (eg alarm) drawing current.

I can't find the battery spec in the workshop manual - mind you finding anything specific in it is rather difficult due to the way it's organised.

 

The service training pdf gives some figures though, but apart from saying that the 75Ah battery is for the North American market it doesn't say what battery fits which car. Just quotes capacity and CCA:

 

61Ah/330A

72Ah/380A

75Ah/420A

80Ah/380A

My current battery is a Varta 12V 80Ah 380A.

 

The Bosch one seems remarkably cheap. Not quite the same numbers, but not sure how big a deal it is to match the numbers precisely.
